We care so much about the music at &ATJ, and part of what makes this event special is the specific slice of swing and blues that we play, in particular:

Groovy Swing: Post-WWII era swing characterized by smaller “combo” bands, an emphasized 2 and 4, and all-around playful attitude

♫ Rockhouse (Ray Charles)
♫ Lavender Coffin (Lionel Hampton)

NOLA Jazz: characterized by a single-time backbeats, polyphonic melodies, and use of horns or stringed instruments.

♫ Sweet Substitute (Meschiya Lake And The Little Big Horns)
♫ Blue Drag (Allen Toussaint)
Gambler's Blues (Stan Kenton)

Jazzy blues: blues songs arranged in a jazzy style.

♫ When I Get Low (Gordon Webster)
♫ I Ain't Got Nothing But The Blues (Mose Allison)

Torch songs: ballads played and/or sung with jazz/blues styling, often about unrequited love.

♫ Cry Me a River (Julie London)
♫ One For My Baby (Ella Fitzgerald)

Soul & Gospel: different takes on African-American spiritual music, especially the ones coming out of the 1950s and 1960s. Characterized by hand claps, harmonized vocals
(more emphasized on Sunday)

♫ Let’s Stay Together (Al Green)
♫ Georgia On My Mind (Ray Charles)
